Deja Vu: 'Lincoln,' 'Argo,' 'Life of Pi' recall Oscars' past

By Lisa Rosen

Everybody loves a winner — and Hollywood banks on it. As the nine best picture Oscar nominees head for the finish line, The Envelope takes a look at their chances for gold by looking back at successful predecessors. Films with similar themes, soaring emotions and searing images that have previously won the statuette may help us set the Oscar stage this time around.

Sometimes it takes a light touch to hit on heavy topics. With its deft interweaving of the droll and the deadly serious, using a con to end all cons, "Argo" calls up fond memories of 1973's "The Sting." For good measure, we'll throw in "One Day in September" (1999), a documentary Oscar winner about the Munich massacre. Each film looks at a hostage situation that shook the 1970s, diving deep into the story behind the headlines.
