OK OK…this week’s blog isn’t so much about saying that one kind of music is better than the other…but more to just pose the question of what makes “good” music.
A Facebook friend of mine made the point that I came to adopt back in college – music “is supposed to communicate something to the observer/audience.”
Over the last year I’ve found that for me communication and making connection is really what life is all about. Looking at what music is communicating and how it’s communicating to us (consciously and subconsciously) is maybe something we should all do at the start of this New Year. AND WHY STOP THERE? Take a look at the film, art, literature, etc.
Another good point my friend made had to do with the level at which communication was taking place. At the age of….say…30, do you still want to communicate at first grade level? OR do you want to challenge yourself? Do you want to expand? Grow? Learn?
I still do think that music/art/film/etc. is subjective BUT I there is an amount of personal responsibility we must all take. That is to make an intentional stand about what exactly we want to allow into our lives.
Take a stand this year and make a decision on what you want to let into your life. Maybe that means taking the time to seek out a less “popular” band. Maybe that’s exploring a new Pandora station. Maybe it’s shutting the radio off for a car ride to experience quiet. Whatever it is…challenge yourself with something new!!!
Happy Listening!
Emily
