A six-year-old Newton girl makes a new friend more than 600 miles away and it's all because of a note attached to a pink balloon.

Kindergartner Peyton Henderson had no idea when she launched her balloon with more than 500 others, she would actually get a reply back.

Two days after she set it free here in Kansas, someone found it in Glen Allan, Mississippi, more than 600 miles away.

Peyton was one of a few hundred students from Chisholm Trail Elementary who participated in a balloon launch last September.

Her balloon was pink and had a note attached: "if you find my balloon please let me know where it landed and a little about you and your town."

A retired farmer and his wife found her balloon and sent her a package with trinkets and souvenirs about their town.

Peyton says she was expecting something else when she learned the package was from Mississippi.

What's your favorite thing, out of everything he sent you? asks Eyewitness News reporter Sia Nyorkor.

"This," responds Peyton, showing me the man's letter.

Peyton's family is planning to meet her new pen pal and his wife over spring break when they travel down south.

"You kind of forget that there's still people who will snail mail and send things back and not just email. so it's exciting, she gets to learn something about Mississippi and to see how small the world really is," says her father, Heath Henderson.

Peyton says she's one of the lucky ones.
