A modern sports complex could be part of a new development proposed for Bel Aire.

Earlier this month, developers unveiled plans for the Caban Marketplace. The development will be more than 500 acres and promises new shopping and entertainment venues. Monday developers unveiled plans for the Kansas Sports Academy to join the development.

In an e-mail, developer Tom Blitz says the 220,000 square foot complex would be designed to host multiple tournaments, league play and clinics as well as address speed and strength training for young adults and children. Blitz says it will include 17 full-size basketball courts, 25 volleyball courts, eight outdoor tennis courts and three outdoor sand volleyball courts.

The plan for the marketplace is still in development, but developers behind Kansas Sports Academy hope to break ground later this year. The city of Bel Aire and developers hope to use STAR bonds to help finance the marketplace. The bonds use sales tax revenue to help pay for the project, but to qualify, a development must be considered a state-wide tourism draw.
