A large military plane has been causing turbulence at a small Kansas airport.
Several Eyewitness New viewers contacted the newsroom about a low-flying plane that would approach the airport, then fly by. Some people were even lucky enough to take pictures of the plane. Don Rogers caught the flight on camera.
"We had the biggest bird coming down for a low approach, gear down, like they were going to land," he said. He said this went on for about 45 minutes.
The aircraft caused quite a scene.
"We had cars up and down the runways, up and down both sides airport road on fourth street," he said. "Everyone was watching the large airplane."
Many viewers thought the plane was a Boeing 747-200B, also known as Air Force One. But the paint scheme did not match the one that was caught flying around Hutchinson.
The plane appears to be a Boeing 747 E-4 Advanced Airborne Command Post. The plane is a militarized version of the Boeing 747-200. It serves as the National Airborne Operations Center for the president, secretary of defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Eyewitness News tried to contact Boeing, Air Force One and military officials for comment on the near-touchdowns. No phone calls were returned.
