Propane is now powering school buses in the Goddard school district.

The buses look normal, but it's what inside that makes them unique. The switch to propane cuts costs while reducing harmful emissions, a district spokeswoman said.

"The one thing they say about these buses is how quiet they are," Annette Singletary said.

Compared to diesel fuel, propane cuts carbon monoxide emissions by 60-percent. Nitrogen oxide and greenhouse gases are also decreased by 20-percent.

The alternative fuel may not get as many miles to the gallon as traditional diesel fuel, but it is cheaper.
