They're accused of killing an Augusta
grandmother, now one of the suspects is headed to trial.
Lindsey Giovinazzo and her boyfriend, Jacob Hoyt, are charged with premeditated murder, theft and arson in the death of 69-year-old Loyce Cody. Now we're learning new details about the crime.
"They were talking about going in and robbing her of her debit card," said Augusta Police Captain Bruce Relph. "Then the conversation went from there into they were going to kill her by sufficating her."
Relph said Giovinazzo gave him specific details about she and Holt planned for hours to kill his grandmother.
"The two of them were standing outside the door for 30 minutes she said, debating and trying to get the courage to go in the bedroom," Relph said.
They did, and according to Giovinazzo, began strangling Cody. But it wasn't working, so the two suspects grabbed a plastic bag and put it over Cody's head.
"They basically sat on her and sufficated her until she quit moving," Relph said. "I think lindsey told me that until Mrs. Cody quit scratching her."
Once she was dead, Relph says both suspects went to a bank and used Cody's debit card to take out about $600. They then went back to Cody's house to steal her car.
Both were later arrested in that car, after a short chase with police.
Relph says Giovinazzo showed little emotion during his interview with the suspect, and at first he says she had one concern.
"She immediately wanted to know, did he blame everything on me?", Relph testified.
Jacob Hoyt is still waiting on a competency motion, so his preliminary hearing has not been set.
Giovinazzo will be back in court May 2 for an arraignment, where she will make a plea in her case.
