Republican Mike Pompeo is running for U.S. House of Representatives District 4 which includes the Wichita metro area. In one of his latest ads he claims Democratic opponent Raj Goyle supports amnesty for illegals.
Claim: "In the army Mike Pompeo led a tank platoon to secure the West German border. In congress he'll secure America’s border."
The ad refers to Pompeo's effort to secure the West German border before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Pompeo was in the U.S. Army from 1986 to 1991.
Claim: "Democrat Raj Goyle called the idea of a border fence ridiculous and sending illegals home financially reckless."
Goyle made those statements, but the ad doesn't provide complete context.
Goyle was quoted about a border fence in an article for Homeland Security Today. He called the building of the fence ridiculous, but goes on to say it doesn't address the economic realities of the dependence of American business on illegal immigrants.
The other statement about sending illegals home was made in a study Goyle co-authored for the Center for American Progress, a self described progressive Washington think tank.
The actual quote says, “The costs of a massive deportation policy would not only be substantial, but in many ways, financially reckless. Implementing such a policy would seriously jeopardize our commitment to secure the homeland and pay for our commitments overseas.”
Less than three weeks until Kansans choose their candidate. Don't expect these candidates to back off until the polls close.
