Areas of moderate to occasionally heavy snow and some blizzard conditions are reported over parts of Kansas this afternoon. There is already 3 inches of snow around Wichita, with 6 inches reported in Coldwater and Greensburg and nearly 8 inches in Sun City! Cloudy skies, gusty southeasterly winds and afternoon highs in the upper 20s and lower-30s are forecast will be the rule. 3 to 4 inches of snow is expected for the Wichita area by sunset.
The heaviest snow will fall Wednesday night into Thursday morning as round two of the winter storm plows into the state. Accumulations of 10-12 inches, with even some locally heavier amounts, will be possible across parts of southwest, central and northern Kansas. Locations such as Hays, Russell, Greensburg, Great Bend, Hill City, Dodge City, Concordia and Smith Center will most likely see the heftiest totals. Farther south, the Wichita area could see 6 to as much as 10 inches and the snow will be mixed with sleet at times overnight into the mid-morning hours of Thursday. Driving will be a huge challenge, even potentially dangerous, late Wednesday night through early Thursday morning.
Snowfall will end Thursday evening and temperatures behind the storm will stay rather chilly with highs in the 30s Friday.
