Sixty-nine year-old Loyce Cody was found dead in her Augusta home Monday morning according to the Butler County Sherriff’s office.
Police went to Cody’s home at about 10 a.m. for a welfare check after she failed to show up to work in Wichita. Cody was found dead and her 4-door, metallic blue 2010 Toyota Corolla was missing.
Police began searching for Cody’s car. Police located the vehicle Monday evening while investigating an abandoned, and burned, vehicle in a field southeast of Augusta. Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet says deputies spotted the car as it drove by the scene.
"This was put out early this morning, that we were looking for this vehicle. By the officers paying attention, they happened to see this vehicle drive by and that's when the chase started. The vehicle was finally stopped north of Winfield by Cowley County, Butler County and Augusta," explains Herzet.
The chase went on for 15-20 miles and reached speeds of 100 miles per hour. Police have taken the two people in the car in for questioning but they have not been arrested.
People living in Cody's neighborhood say they can't imagine anyone doing anything to hurt her.
"The sweetest lady you could ever meet. She'd be out taking the trash and stop to wave at you, stop everything she's doing just to wave. "She's just sweet, I can't believe this happened," said Jake Volkman, neighbor. If you have any information or saw this vehicle in the 1600 block of Sunset Sunday, call the Augusta Police Department at 316-775-4500 or Crimestoppers 316-775-0055.
