The Phillipsburg boys picked up another win to remain unbeaten at 14-0. The Smith Center girls got a little revenge with a big win against Ellis.
Phillipsburg
The Panthers boys remain unbeaten and the No. 4 team in a tough Class 3A following a 62-49 win against Southern Valley on Tuesday. Phillipsburg (14-0) led 28-21 at the break, but Southern Valley responded with 18 points in the third quarter to cut the gap to 42-39. The Panthers responded with a 20-10 final quarter for the win. Senior Tad Thompson went 3-of-5 from behind the arc to lead the team with 19 points. Seth Derr added 15 points and seven rebounds. Sean Newlan scored nine points to go along with nine boards.
The Lady Panthers fell to 6-9 overall with a 70-46 loss to the Nebraska-based Eagles. Southern Valley outscored Phillipsburg 42-19 in the second half for the big win. Junior Mattison Dusin hit 11-of-17 free throw tries en route to a 19-point night. Madysen Frantz added eight points and eight rebounds.
Smith Center
Ellis handed Smith Center its only loss of the year in the MCL tournament. Friday, the No. 5 Lady Redmen got a little revenge, pounding No. 3 Ellis 75-48. With a 69-47 win against Norton on Tuesday, Smith Center improves to 14-1 overall, and 6-0 in the MCL. Tuesday, the Redmen dominated the first quarter 27-13, then used a 22-11 third quarter to establish a 63-38 lead. Four Smith Center had four players reach double-figures, led by Sydney Benoit’s 20 points. Alexis Ryan added 19 points, Colbie Decker 14 points, and Trenna Cox 11 points.
The Smith Center boys (7-8, 2-4) were able to get past Norton 67-60 but fell to Ellis 74-65. The teams battled back and forth on Friday. Ellis outscored the Redmen 34-25 in the first and third quarters combined to outdo damage from the other two quarters. Payton Buckmaster led all scorers with 19 points. Kody Molzahn added 13 points, and Taylor Zabel finished with 10 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
Osborne
The No. 8 Lady Bulldogs improved to 12-3 overall, 4-1 In league, with two wins in week nine. Tuesday, the girls ventured outside the MCL to pound Sylvan-Lucas 56-26. Back in league play on Friday, Osborne handed Trego a 50-28 loss. Minus the second quarter, the Bulldogs outscored Trego 42-18 in the other three quarters of Friday’s win. Junior Caitlin Miller hit 12-of-14 shots, including a three-pointer, to finish with 27 points. Junior Jessica Princ flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 12 pionts, nine rebounds, seven steals, and four assists.
The Bulldog boys were not as fortunate, losing both games by a combined six points. Tuesday, Osborne (3-11) fell to Sylvan 51-48. Friday night, the squad dropped a 70-67 contest to Trego. In Tuesday’s loss, the Bulldogs were outscored 17-15 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Maverick LeRock, Parkes Wolters, and Brandt Wolters each scored nine points, and LeRock led the team with nine rebounds. Kenton Ubelaker finished with eight points.
Ellis
The Railroader boys improved to 11-6 with two more wins in week nine of action. Tuesday, the squad buried Quinter 65-29. Friday, Ellis had its hands full in a 74-65 win against Smith Center. Four Railroaders reached double-figures in Friday’s win. Luke Lohrmeyer led that pack with 15 points, also grabbing eight rebounds. Brayden Werth added 13 points, Jared Mick finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Cole Pfeifer scored 11 points to go along with six rebounds.
The No. 3 Lady Railroaders (15-2) saw a 12-game win-streak come to a close with Friday’s 75-48 loss to Smith Center. Tuesday, the squad downed Quinter 55-43. Two quarters ultimately cost Ellis on Friday. Trailing 27-13 after one quarter, the squad kept that gap at the break 41-27. Smith Center pulled away in the third quarter, adding 11 more points to its lead. Alexcia Deutscher finished with 17 points in the loss, and Kaleigh Soneson added 10 points.
Plainville
The Cardinal boys have yet to break into the Class 2A top-10 despite a 14-2 record. Plainville (7-0 in the MCL) picked up two of those wins last week, downing Victoria 52-47 on Tuesday, then defeating Stockton 59-53 on Friday. Friday, the Cards outscored Victoria 35-29 in the second half to steal a five-point win. Junior Hadley Gillium had another monster night with 29 points and 26 rebounds. He is now averaging nearly 19 points and 15 boards a game. Nolan Weiser added 13 points and nine rebounds in the win.
The Lady Cardinals (9-7 overall) went 1-1 on the week, falling to Victoria 47-46, then rebounding to beat Stockton 46-32. In Friday’s win, the girls led 23-13 by halftime. Kim Junkmeier paced the team with 14 points, and Allison Sears finished with 10 points. Hannah Friend added nine points and Shelby Pywell eight points.
Norton
The Norton basketball squads had another busy week with three games. The Lady Jays improved to 10-7 with a 2-1 showing. Tuesday, the girls lost to No. 5 Smith Center 69-47. From there, they downed Hill City 42-33 on Friday, and defeated Rawlins County 47-35 on Saturday. Friday, the MCL-foes played even except in the middle quarters when Norton outscored the Ringnecks 22-13. Senior Tawni Griffey hit 10-of-16 shots, including two threes, to lead the team with 22 points and four steals. Bailey Ambrosier added seven points and six rebounds, and Katelyn Engelbert grabbed seven boards go to along with four points.
The Norton boys (6-11) managed just one win on the week, downing Rawlins County 78-54. In MCL play, the Jays fell to Smith Center 67-60, and lost to Hill City 51-45. After giving up a 21-12 first quarter lead on Saturday, Norton outscored Rawlins County 50-26 in the second half for the big win. Senior Jacob Brooks poured in 20 points and grabbed nine boards. Andrew Ellis hit four threes en route to a 14-point night. Dalton Miller scored 14 points and Andrew Schrum added 10 points.
Hill City
The Ringneck boys picked up two wins in week nine to get back on the plus side of .500 at 8-7. Tuesday, Hill City snuck past Ness City 45-42. Friday, the Ringnecks outscored Norton 28-18 in the second half to earn a 51-45 win. In Tuesday’s win, the boys also needed a big second half, outscoring Ness City 28-16 to erase a 26-17 halftime deficit. In that win, Shane Jones scored 18 points, followed by nine points from Soloman Wilson.
The Lady Ringnecks (6-8) beat Ness City 57-45, but fell to Norton 42-33. Hill City played even with the Lady Jays in the first and fourth quarters on Friday, but lost the middle quarters 22-13 for the nine-point difference. In Tuesday’s win, Shelby Stewart hit 3-of-7 three-point tries to pace the team with 17 points. Megan Gansel was even better from the outside, draining 4-of-6 tries to finish with 15 points.
Stockton
The Tiger basketball teams had a similar week. The boys, who recently dropped out of the Div. I top 10, defeated Logan 75-40 on Tuesday, but fell 59-53 to a tough Plainville team on Friday. The Lady Tigers overcame an 11-0 deficit against Logan to win 27-25, but fell to Plainville 46-32 on Friday.
The boys (9-5) outscored Logan 28-6 in the opening frame, and 20-12 in the fourth quarter for their big win. Koby Beougher led a group of scorers with 18 points. Justin Wiltfong added 14 points, Reed Stephens 12 points, and Christian Hamel 10 points. The Lady Tigers did not score in the first quarter but still managed to pull out a win. Sophomore Morgan Beougher scored 17 of the squad’s 27 points.
Trego
The Golden Eagle boys were able to stay out of the MCL basement with a 70-67 win against Osborne on Friday. Trego (5-10, 2-4) led 24-16 after one quarter, but had to hang on as Osborne outscored the squad 51-46 the rest of the way. Senior John Griffith led the team with 21 points. Junior Clayton Riedl filled the stat sheet with 18 points, 17 rebounds, six blocks, four assists, and three steals. Blake Huxman was 3-of-4 from the outside to finish with 14 points, and Devon Ghumm reached double-figures with 13 points.
The Lady Golden Eagles (1-12, 0-6) fell to the No. 8 Lady Bulldogs 50-28, hitting double-figures in just the second quarter before being outscored 29-10 in the second half. Junior Addie Zeman scored 15 points, including two three-pointers. Shaylee Flax added eight points and five rebounds. Bailee Fritts had the other five points, leading the team with eight rebounds.
