Marysville held up its end of the North Central Kansas League wrestling showdown set for Thursday night when they ventured into Chapman Tuesday night and pinned a 57-18 defeat on the Chapman Fighting Irish.
The win improves the Bulldogs’ overall dual record to 8-0 on the season, but more importantly, it keeps Marysville undefeated in NCKL action with a 3-0 record.
The Bulldogs will put that 3-0 NCKL record on the line this Thursday night when they play host to Abilene, which is also undefeated in NCKL action this season and stands with a 2-0 record.
"Both are unbeaten so it is going to be a tough one," Marysville head coach Cole Friederickson said of the dual with Abilene on Thursday. "It is going to decide the league title this year."
Tuesday night the Bulldogs did not have very much trouble picking up the win as they won 10 of the 12 matches wrestled against Chapman. In the varsity dual there were 11 matches wrestled, with three matches being determined by default, and one junior varsity match which Marysville won.
Of the nine varsity matches the Bulldogs won, one was by major decisions, one was via technical fall and five were by pins, meaning Marysville scored bonus points in seven of their victories.
"We wrestled hard and finished matches," Friederickson said. "Some of those we were behind and we had to come from behind and get after guys in the third period and let the chips fall where they may.
"We try and think we go into everything expecting to win. I knew they had some tough kids and we came in expecting to have a match and wrestle hard."
The Bulldogs opened the dual with a 10-2 major decision from Chris Deters at 106 which was followed by a 20-5 technical fall from Josh Goepfert at 113 and a 4-3 overtime decision from Konner Cue at 120 to build an early 12-0 lead after three matches.
Chapman’s Robert Steck got the Fighting Irish on the board with a pin at 126 before Marysville ripped off back to back pins from Joe Smith (132) and James Landoll (138) which was followed by a 4-2 decision win by Dylan Jones (145) making it a 27-6 Marysville lead.
"We have to get it going earlier in matches," Friederickson said. "We need to score more in the first period and not wait until the second and third period to start scoring our offense. But I am pleased with the way they finished the matches and really got after it there."
The Bulldogs then got a default victory at 152 and a pin from Josh Nelson (160) before Chapman’s next victory which was a pin from Zack Witt (170).
Mikah Nietfeld (182) kept the winning going for the Bulldogs with a pin and Marysville picked up another forfeiture at 195 before the Bulldogs’ Casey Hilton closed out the matches with a pin at 220.
The Bulldogs were open at 285 giving the final six points to the Fighting Irish.
The loss drops Chapman to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the NCKL while Marysville improves to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in NCKL heading into Thursday night’s NCKL showdown with Abilene.
Chapman’s next action will be this Friday and Saturday when they compete in the Concordia Dual Tournament.
"We just came off a third place finish in Beloit," Friederickson said. "I’m feeling pretty good about things right so I guess we will see where we are at on Thursday."
