There may not have been a more disappointed team in the entire state of Kansas Saturday than the Derby girls’ bowling team.
It was announced that Campus and Derby finished with the same overall score so it was sent to a tiebreak. The determining tiebreak was which team bowled a higher high game.
Campus 213, Derby 214. Derby had just won the first annual Campus Bowling Invitational. So along the awards ceremony went, right into the boys’ finishers. A Seneca Bowl worker then approached the medal table and had a short discussion with the announcer.
Both teams were asked to return to the front with medals in hand. The announcer spoke into the PA there was an error in the scoring. The tiebreak still went to the higher game; this time, though, Campus 235, Derby 214. Campus won its first annual bowling tournament as the Derby girls watched the trophy they thought they won go to another’s hands.

“I was shell shocked when I found out,” said head bowling coach Kenny Fulkerson. “I didn’t even think about the (235) game. I would have caught it eventually, but right off the bat, I didn’t think about it.”
Wichita Southeast took third with 2,143. Maize and Mulvane rounded out the top five.
Going into the final four games, Campus held steady at third place and going into the final two games, the Lady Colts were in fourth by more than 100 pins. But they clawed their way back.
“Now we need to focus on league,” said Fulkerson. “They needed confidence and I think now they believe in themselves. Now they know they can win. Kids around here have gotten so used to losing, now they need to get used to winning.”
The Campus boys didn’t have a terrible afternoon, either. The only time the Colts didn’t lead was after the first two games when they rolled a two-game total of 449, two pins off the Wichita South lead of 451. From then on, though, it was all Campus.
With leads of 19, 67, 38 and 57, Campus didn’t mess around. The Colts finished with a team total of 2,732, 51 ahead of runner-up Wichita Southeast.
South finished third with 2,574. Mulvane and Circle rounded out the top five.
