The North Central Kansas League has announced its 2013 Winter All NCKL teams and while the Abilene Cowboys and Cowgirls did not win any of the three NCKL championships in the 2012-2013 season the Cowboys and Cowgirls combined to compile the most individual honors with 16.
Abilene finished second in the NCKL in both boys’ basketball and wrestling and was fourth in girls’ basketball.
Marysville, which won the 2013 NCKL wrestling championship came in second in the individual honors with 15 while Wamego had 11, Concordia had 10, Clay Center had nine and Chapman had six athletes earn post-season NCKL honors.
Each sport named a first team and honorable mention. Both basketball squads had 10 First Team members. The All NCKL wrestling team had one first team member for each weight class. In boys basketball there were eight athletes named to the honorable mention while nine female athletes were named to the honorable mention in girls basketball.
Concordia
Concordia earned three members on the All NCKL boys basketball first team in Cooper Holmes, Grant Holmes and Gabe Bergmann and one boys basketball honorable mention in Alan Garcia. The Lady Panther basketball team, which finished in sixth place with a 3-18, 1-9 record, had one player named to the All NCKL First Team in Megan James and one on the honorable mention list in Tristen Leiszler. The Panther wrestling team, which finished third in the NCKL, had two named to the All NCKL First Team in Skyler Hittle (195) and Kyle Marks (220) and two named honorable mention in Cameron Miller (113) and Drake Hake (138).
Abilene
The Cowboy basketball team finished second in the NCKL with a 20-6, 7-3 record as Andy Wilson and Jacob Harms were both named First Team while Keil Kelly and Matthew Barlow were both named to the Honorable Mention list. The Cowgirl basketball team finished the season with a 12-10, 4-6 record and had Belle Barbieri and Kiley Crider named to the All NCKL First Team and Courtney Geist named to the Honorable Mention list. In wrestling, where the Cowboys finished in second place in the NCKL, Abilene had two First Team representatives in Junior Morgan (120) and Caysen Smith (126) and seven wrestlers named Honorable Mention in Logan McDowell (106), Zane Baugh (113), Seth Straus (132), Jacob Hagedorn (152), Nick Ward (160), Alex Madackz (182) and Jonathan Todd (285).
Clay Center
The Tigers and Lady Tigers had nine athletes earn post-season NCKL honors as Dalton Haist was named to the Al l NCKL First Team in basketball after helping the Tigers to a 3-18, 1-9 record while Caleb Carson was named Honorable Mention. The Lady Tigers, who finished 18-4, 8-2, had three players named to the First Team in Alyx Bloom, Alyssa Steppe and Macy Franson and two named Honorable Mention in Macey Dieckmann and Holly Cooper. The Tiger wrestling team had one wrestler named First Team in Grady Ware (145) and one wrestler named Honorable Mention in Zach Thurlow (195).
Marysville
Marysville High School, which finished fourth in boys basketball with a 10-12, 3-7 record, third in girls’ basketball with a 15-8, 7-3 record and won the NCKL wrestling championship, had 15 individual athletes earn post-season NCKL honors. The Bulldog basketball team was represnted by Garrison Wright on the First Team and Brandon Griffee on the Honorable Mention list. The Lady Bulldogs were represented by Abbi Degenhardt and Tristin Wicks on the First Team and Dani Schwartz on the Honorable Mention list while the NCKL champion wrestling team had six members on the First Team in Chris Dieters (106), Josh Goepfert (113), James Landoll (138), Tim Cramer (152), Josh Nelson (160) and Mikah Nietfeld (182) and four members on the Honorable Mention list in Dylan Jones (145), Dave Luebcke (170), Brandon Escocio (195) and Casey Hilton (220.
Wamego
Wamego High School won both basketball NCKL championships as the Lady Raiders finished 25-1, 10-0 and won the Class 4A state championship while the Red Raider boys were 18-5, 9-1 while the Red Raider wrestling team finished sixth after going 0-5 in NCKL duals this season. The Red Raider boys’ basketball team was represented by Isaac Poe and Marshall Wethington on the boys’ First Team and by Matt Webb and Dakota Turner on the boys’ Honorable Mention list. The Lady Raiders were represented by Kaylee Page and Lanie Page on the All NCKL First Team in girls’ basketball and by Rikki Alderson and Lakyn Rowden on the Honorable Mention list. In wrestling the Raiders had one First Team member in Kyle Wilson (132) and two Honorable Mention members in Dalton Carley (120) and Jacob Dietrich (126).
Chapman
Chapman High School had six athletes honored in the post-season NCKL awards with one First Team boys basketball player in Zach Heiman, one Honorable Mention boys basketball member in Logan Lehmkuhl. The Lady Irish, who tied for fifth in the NCKL with a 3-18, 1-9 record, did not have anybody named to the First Team but had Lindsey Hurford and Jordan Woods named to the All NCKL Honorable Mention list. The Fighting Irish wrestling team, which finished fifth in the NCKL, had two members named to the All NCKL First Team in Zach Witt (170) and Jason Zook (285).
