The dramatic rescue of a moose that fell through ice at Alexander Creek was recently caught on camera by the group of snowmachiners who saved it from the frigid waters.
The cow moose was literally up a creek without a paddle at the site, near the base of Mount Susitna near Anchorage, until it got a little help from human hands.
Four people, including Carl Thiele Jr., Micheal Mason, Elson Mast, and Nancy Conklin, plus a dog, helped the struggling moose out of the water, where it had apparently broken through ice while trying to eat willows.
The group used a strap and their snowmachines to help pull the moose out of the creek. Once the moose was out, group members rubbed it down and dried it off to keep it warm.
The rescuers say they left the moose alone for a couple of hours before returning to check on the animal. The moose still looked weak, but ate willows and birch offered by the rescuers.
After the trip, photos of the rescue taken by Conklin were posted on a “Micheal Nancy Mason” Facebook account shared by Mason and Conklin, then shared by group members with Channel 2.
Members of the group say that at times nature can be cruel, but they hope they cheated it this time.
