Pictures: Break the bread habit

Poundcake: When good isn't good enough, use this classic dessert (and break the bread habit) to build unexpected delights. No one can argue with it. Indeed, it is its very ordinariness that makes it useful in the kitchen.

Another great brunch item. Use a biscuit cutter or knife to carve out a 3-inch hole in the center of a poundcake slice. Fry the slice and the hole in butter or, better yet, bacon fat. In a separate pan or pot, fry or poach an egg the way you like it and set it in the center of the slice. Break the yolk and dunk the hole piece inside. Yum. Oh, and don't forget the bacon and coffee.
