Wichita Islamic Society Condemns Ft. Hood Shooting

by Kim Hynes (WICHITA, Kan.)

As those based at Ft. Hood begin to recover from last week's deadly shooting, Wichita's Islamic Society begins damage control. The suspected shooter, Major Nidal Hasan was Muslim. "We condemn and reject any kind of murder," said spokesman Hussam Madi.

Madi says the alleged actions of Hasan do not represent their religion. "The faith itself has nothing to do with this. We would like to get the message out that Islam teaches peace and harmony." Madi says the suspect is giving the Muslim faith a bad name, even though extremists exist in every religion and culture. "No matter what he says, it's not justified. That killing is not justified," Madi said.

He's also against the suspects idea that Muslims should be able to opt out of war's against Muslim country's. "There are a lot of Muslims serving and serving proudly. A lot are heading out to Iraq and Afghanistan and they need them to be there."

He says they welcome people stop by and visit or call to learn more. He'd rather people have educated opinions on the faith instead of just learning about it when extremist's act out.
