(AUGUSTA, Kan.)

A shooting in Augusta kills a 14-year-old girl. Police were called to a home in the 900 block of Wirth Street around 10:30 Friday night.

Location of Shooting

Police identified her as Andrea Young. She was a freshman at Augusta High School.

"She did not deserve any of this she was a good kid. It was just an accident," said Kayla Luna, Young's best friend.

Police say a 25-year-old who lived at the home was showing guns when one of them went off, hitting Young in the head. Three teenagers we spoke with say they saw what happened and it was an accident.

They tell Eyewitness News the man would never hurt anyone and no one would have ever wanted to hurt Young.

Investigators say there was a party going on at the home and drinking was involved. Augusta's police chief says he believes around 20 to 30 teenagers were at the home.

Police took the 25-year-old into custody on a charge of involuntary manslaughter and hosting, in regards to underage drinking.

"These are the kinds of things that occur when you have guns and kids and that mix and drugs and things of that nature it just isn't a good mix," said Augusta Police Chief Tyler Brewer.

Brewer adds his department works very hard to stop underage drinking and this incident will only make them work harder.

"I will guarantee you, as the Chief of Police in Augusta, Kansas, if I find another hosted party we will take it to the fullest extreme of the law."

The man who fired the shot has not been charged yet and the case remains under investigation.

Augusta High School has been notified and a crisis plan is being put into effect.

Eyewitness News is not naming the suspect until he is formally charged.
