Aquifer Project Enters Largest Construction Phase

by Sarah Kallail (WICHITA, Kan.)

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday, as construction crews move into the largest phase of the Aquifer Storage and Recovery project.

Phase II began for the project that ensures Wichita will have a reliable water supply through 2050. Excess water will be taken out of the Little Arkansas River, treated, then pumped underground into the Equus Beds aquifer for later use.

This phase of construction is expected to be completed in 2012. There are five different projects:  Water Treatment Plant and Intake Structure; Pipelines; Recharge and Recovery Wells; Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems; and Overhead Power Lines.

The entire ASR project consists of four phases and costs $400 million.

It's scheduled to be completed by 2018.
