Belle Plaine Police: Child Died of Asphyxiation

Latest Update:

Belle Plaine police say a 4-year-old died of asphyxiation. Caden Michael Reames was found not breathing at his home in the 500 block of E. 7th Tuesday.

Police initially called it suspicious and today investigators are sticking to that ruling.

Police Chief Gordon Fell isn't saying much about the investigation into the child's death. He will say four other children are in protective custody and officers have taken several items from the home.  Investigators are also interviewing the children.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Exploited and Missing Children's Unit, Wichita Police and the Sumner County Sheriff's Department are all assisting in the case.

Police in Belle Plaine are investigating the death of a four-year-old boy.  Sgt. Bill Berry withe Belle Plaine PD says Emergency crews were called to a home Tuesday afternoon and found the boy was unresponsive and not breathing.

The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

"Any child four years old that dies, there's definitely going to be investigated and considered suspicious," said Sgt. Berry. "It's not normal."

Belle Plaine Police and the Sumner County Sheriff's Department are working together on the case.

An autopsy was set for Wednesday.

Police would not say whether or not there was any evidence of trauma.
