Operation Rescue Starts Research Project About Abortion Provider

Operation Rescue launches a research project it hopes will stop an another abortion clinic from opening. The anti-abortion group wants to hear from patients of a Nebraska abortion provider. Dr. LeRoy Carhart dismisses Operation Rescue's claims.

Not long after the death of Dr. George Tiller, Dr. Carhart voiced his intentions to continue Tiller's work. Operation Rescue vowed to stop him.

"Mr. Carhart is more concerned with his personal image than the lives of his patients," said Troy Newman, Operation Rescue.

Operation Rescue wants to hear from those patients, especially those who may have had negative experiences with Dr. Carhart. Newman says he'll put the information into a report and give it to the attorneys general of Nebraska and Kansas.

"We've actually already had several people contact us," said Newman. "We found out some information about his practice that we aren't ready to release, but it concerns us."

Dr. Carhart dismisses all of Newman's claims saying they are a publicity stunt.

"They have never let the truth stand in the way of getting their point across," said Carhart. "They will make up anything they want to get media time."

Carhart says he is continuing his plans to open a new late-term abortion clinic in Kansas, where he believes his patients will get the same professional and safe care as his former patients.

"I think they will all have strong, positive comments about the care they received from our clinic," said Carhart. "Operation Rescue can do as much digging as it wants."

Dr. Carhart still will not go into details about his plan to open a new abortion clinic. He won't say where in Kansas he is looking. Carhart says the plans are ahead of schedule, and things could be finalized within the next couple of months.

Operation Rescue says it wants the community where Carhart decides to open a new abortion clinic to have a say before it opens. It's convinced that the results of the research will motivate people to fight against a new clinic.
